Assignment 2: The Night Circus; Colour Palette Variations

Assignment 2; Task: It is now time to get visually creative. You need to inspire your client with a colour palette and you’re required to create two inspiration boards for your chosen theme; The Night Circus.

So starting this assignment was easy, as ultimately my first colour palette HAD to be based on those colours which appear in the book. Simply, black and white, juxtaposed with finer red accents, hence one of the main reasons that I chose this book as my focus theme! The more important step was choosing the right shades of each colour to reflect my ideal perspective. I scoured through colour chart after colour chart, put together combination after combination and finally settled on Pantone 19-0303 TPX Jet Black, Pantone 11-0601 TX Bright White and Pantone 18-1763 TPC High Risk Red! The result is a colour palette that creates a bold, dramatic statement and demands modern day guests embrance the same passion and love as guests did on opening night at Les Cirque De Reves, 1886.

Colour palette number 2 took a little longer to decide upon. I wanted to choose something that was currently on trend, which I could twist to suit my particular theme but was a complete contrast to my initial choice!I did some research around vintage patterns and colours, and decided to go with a palette that was more true to that romantic feel of sweet, innocent love that you might usually associate with a vintange perspective. Soft pastel colours, plush, feathery fabrics and lace, images of flowers and all things pretty. So, I ended up with the colours Pantone 317 PC Pastel blue, Pantone 11-0602 PXC Snow White and Pantone 14-1911 TCX Candy Pink. I love, love, love the comparison between Bright White and Snow White! The snow white, particularly when you look at the use of it in decor and furnishings, is so soft and warm and romantic! And of course, how could I not choose Candy Pink. Not only is it a shade of my favourite colour, but the colour and the name instantly paint pictures of fairy floss, shows and carnivals in my mind. I think the overall use of these three colours creates the feel of a vintage event that oozes sweetness and purity, with a little twist of circus. I love it!

So, ultimately the task was to design a way to inspire the client whose mind was set on a particular theme, but not yet a colour palette! Initially I was set on the red, black and white theme, as it flows so beautifully out of the pages of The Night Circus and into an event, but now I am not so sure! I really love both of the palettes, and when I spoke to my tutor about making a selection she agreed that she would have difficulty choosing her favourite!

So I need your help!!

As I am carrying out the whole planning process as if I were working with a real client, I want to make a selection based on the colour palette I wish to continue working on on developing throughout the course! But at the moment I honestly can not choose! Help me by dropping your opinion over on my comment page! Just hit the comments button at the top, or click here. Which palette would you choose, and why?
